Attacca

Attacca

The end of the Larghetto Stiletto movement of Dinklaker’s Eighth Piano Concerto was marked “Attacca.” But instead of proceeding directly to the Finale, soloist Arno Pringler, always a literalist, unsheathed a tomahawk and left no doubt as to his opinion of the keyboard that orchestra management had provided him.

Saturday Night Special: 60x60 Wave Farm

Saturday Night Special: 60x60

Saturday May 31, 2014: 8 p.m. – June 1, 2014: 1 a.m.

Tune in for a marathon of five 60x60 programs. 60 works by 60 artists, 60x60 offers something different every minute 60x60 is a project containing 60 works each 60 seconds in length presented continuously in an hour performance synchronized with an analog clock. 60x60 presents a slice of what is happening in sound and new music by representing 60 works that are diverse in aesthetic and style. Works are selected from an international pool of emerging and established composers and sequenced in order. The resulting mix is presented, without interruption, as a continuous one-hour performance synchronized to an on-stage analog clock, or radio broadcast in the case of this special series on Wave Farm's WGXC.

Electronic Music Midwest
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Deadline: June 1, 2014

Electronic Music Midwest is dedicated to programming of a wide variety of electroacoustic music and providing the highest quality performance of electronic media. This annual festival consists of approximately nine short concerts (about 1 hour in length) over the course of a weekend in Autumn. Our goal is to bring together vibrant and interesting artists of all forms, give them a vehicle for their expressions, and a place for them to share ideas with others.

Since its beginning, EMM has programmed over 500 new electroacoustic compositions. Composers have traveled from around the world to graciously share their music with audiences in the Midwest. However, EMM is about more than just playing new music. We strive to create an environment conducive to building community interaction. Most concerts are approximately one hour long, and composers have plenty of time to "talk shop" with each other as well as interact socially with students and audience member

Craig Hultgren

2014 EMM Guest Artist:
Craig Hultgren

For several decades, cellist Craig Hultgren has been a fixture on the scenes for new music, the newly creative arts, and the avant-garde. In recent years, he has performed solo concerts and chamber music in Rome, New York, Boston, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Miami, Atlanta, Orlando, Denver, Nashville, Memphis and San Antonio. A recipient of two Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, he was a member for many years of Thátmyris, a contemporary chamber music ensemble in Atlanta. A cellist in the Alabama Symphony, he also plays in Luna Nova, a new music ensemble with a large repertoire of performances available as podcast downloads on iTunes.

Hultgren is featured in three solo CD recordings including The Electro-Acoustic Cello Book on Living Artist Recordings. For ten years, he produced the Hultgren Solo Cello Works Biennial, an international competition that highlighted the best new compositions for the instrument. He teaches at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Alabama School of Fine Arts and Birmingham-Southern College where he directed the BSC New Music Ensemble. He is a founding member and President of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance and is on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Birmingham. Hultgren recently completed a CAMA artist residency (Collaborating Artists Manifesting Adventure) with the St. Louis New Music Circle where he presented programs for three seasons. Recently, he performed a 15 Minutes of Fame concert titled Occupy Cello in New York for the Composer's Voice Concert Series. That program featured 15 one-minute solo compositions that challenge the traditional boundaries of the instrument.

Call for Submissions

Lewis University and Kansas City Kansas Community College are pleased to announce an international call for submissions for the Electronic Music Midwest Festival, featuring guest performer Craig Hultgren, to be held October 16-18, 2014 at Lewis University.

Fifteen Minutes of Fame

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: New Thread Quartet, saxophone quartet

Deadline: June 11, 2014

Vox Novus is calling for one-minute pieces composed for Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: New Thread Quartet, saxophone quartet to be premiered on January 11, 2014 for the Composer’s Voice concert Series at the Jan Hus Church in New York City.

Founded in 2011, New Thread Quartet is committed to the creation and performance of saxophone quartet repertoire from New York’s burgeoning new music scene. Members of the ensemble are active as composers, performers, educators and industry professionals within the five boroughs, and share the goal of commissioning, and working closely with, New York City composers to develop impactful new works for the saxophone.

Now in its fourth season, New Thread has performed for a wide range of audiences and venues within the five boroughs, including Dance Theatre of Harlem, Bronx Community College, D’Addario Chelsea/Collective School, Dimmena Center's NYsoundCircuit, Con Vivo’s Mercado Park Concert Series (Jersey City), South Oxford Space, Firehouse Space, JACK (Brooklyn), and Flushing Library in Queens.

The quartet has toured widely in the US and abroad, performing at the 2012 NAVY Band Symposium in Fairfax, Virginia, the NASA Biennial Conference at Arizona State University, New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall and internationally at the World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland. This spring, New Thread will perform at the University of Illinois and will premiere Erin Rogers' piece Mother Earth for flute and saxophone quartet, at Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall, with support from a JFund grant.

Nearly all works programmed by New Thread have been written for the group by New York-based composers. Commissions and collaborations include composers Richard Carrick, Anthony Gatto, Gilbert Galindo, Miguel Bolivar, Kati Agocs, Roberto Kalb, Marcelo Lazcano, Michael Djupstrom, Paul Pinto, Erin Rogers, Ben Hjertmann, Pat Muchmore and Luke Schwartz.
