What is 60x60?
60x60 is 60 one-minute works from 60 different artists performed non-stop for an hour.
Each work is one minute (or less) in length and the one hour performance is synchronized to an analog clock. The clock keeps track of each piece as a signpost to whose performance is currently being played. Not only is it a guide to where you are in the program but a visual representation of where you are in the minute performance.
An annual project since 2003, 60x60 starts out as an "audio only" performance. soon after the current year's mix of 60 audio works is quickly paired with other art disciplines in multi-media endeavors.
The project represents a huge endeavor not only to promote contemporary music but also to collaborate with all forms of art such as dance, video, photography, etc. These endeavors are seen in the multimedia collaborations 60x60 Dance and 60x60 Video.

Why 60 seconds?
60 seconds was chosen because it was an even interval of time, one minute and can be divided simply and easily represented on an analog clock.

What can happen in 60 seconds?
"A minute can be ample time to express a whole gamut of imaginative sounds, or it can be a constraint which forces an artist to isolate what is the most important element of a work. Why 60 pieces?
60 pieces was chosen to present the maximum amount of artists during an intermissionless performance with exact intervals of time that can be presented in one hour. (An intermissionless performance is a performance without breaks, pause or intermissions; the 60x60 performance runs continuously without pause)

Why a clock?
The clock is a guide for the audience to show when each piece starts and ends during the one hour performance.

Where is 60x60 performed?
The 60x60 International mix enjoys at least one performance in New York City and one performance outside of New York City; however, since 2005 the 60x60 International mix averages more than 10 performances in cities throughout the world.

Are 60x60 performances only in concert halls?
Performances of 60x60 have appeared on traditional concert stages, art performance spaces, black box theaters, dance stages, art museums, art galleries, churches, chapels, nightclubs, bars, book stores, store front windows, public parks, public atriums, and the facades of buildings; not to mention movie screens, TV, radio, and Internet.

Is 60x60 only an audio performance?
60x60 starts out with a series of performances that are audio only, and then the project collaborates with other artists with projects such as 60x60 Dance, 60x60 Video, and 60x60 Images.

60x60 has had hundreds of performances throughout the world

How many 60x60 mixes have you created?
60x60 has created more than 35 mixes: yearly International Mixes; several geographically regional mixes such as the Midwest Mix, Pacific Rim Mix, Canada Mix, UK Mix, New York Minute Mix; and several themed mixes such as the ICMC "RED" Mixes, UnTwelve Mix, Evolution Mix, Munich Mix, an the Order of Magnitude Mix.

Can a work be less than 60 seconds?
Yes, all works less than 60 seconds will be "padded" with silence either before or after the piece.

Can a work be more than 60 seconds?
No, the work must be exactly 60 seconds or less to be included in the project.

Can I submit an excerpt of a longer piece?
Excerpts are strongly discouraged; works should be complete onto themselves.

Can I submit a piece that has been performed before?
Yes, works that have been debuted elsewhere are acceptable, but we prefer original works specifically for 60x60.

Can I submit a work that has been produced or presented elsewhere?
Yes, works produced elsewhere are acceptable; however you must attain all the rights both author and publisher in order to submit the work.

What type of works are you looking for?
60x60 is an eclectic gathering of many different styles, aesthetics and genres; the idea is to create a representation of what is happening in today's art scene. The project looks for "signature works" which describes the composers aesthetic or style in 60 seconds; 60x60 also encourages "electro-acoustic experiments" which allow a sound artist to explore the medium. No specific aesthetic or genre is preferred over another.

Do you only pick 60 composers for the project in one year?
No, each year we strive to produce and promote as many composers as possibly feasible with our resources and opportunities. 60 composers are picked for the International Mix. In general we promote at least another 100 composers on each Radio Request Extravaganza we hold. And we promote another 60 composers for each alternate mix we create that year form the submissions received.
