60x60 (2012) UnTwelve Mix
A very special event where UnTwelve is thrilled to be in collaboration with Vox Novus from NYC; they are known in the music world as the producers of 60x60, the incredibly popular format of a 60-minute concert featuring 60 works by 60 composers, each work a minute or less. 60x60 has taken the world by storm, and we are now proud to present a the second UnTwelve version of 60x60. The miniatures we will present will all be part of what we call the UnTwelve Mix--short works with a focus of the novel beauty of tuning which escapes the rigid boundaries of 12-tone equal temperament, and the use of microtones. All of these works are compelling and worth hearing, including pulse pounding music, gorgeous harmonies, dark and moody soundscapes, humorous vignettes, and ecstatic dreamworlds. 60x60 is a collection of 60 electroacoustic or acousmatic works from 60 different composers/artists, each work 60 seconds or less in duration. For the past 10 years, 60x60 has produced and presented more than 40 different mixes in over 300 performances around the world. - Paul BurnellPaul Burnell was born in 1960, Ystrad, South Wales and now lives and writes in London. His music often utilises relentless repetition and pulse within a structure that can be easily perceived as a process. Sometimes humour and spoken word elements are featured. Works include 'Glassblowing' for Bella Tromba trumpet quartet 2010, 'Standard Slowly Squared' for Contakt Ensemble 2011 and '2 Ping' for CoMA Limerick Ensemble. Albums include 'Good to Go' and 'Sticking with Childish Things'. www.musicalsquares.com"Choose an instrument that can sustain any 6 pre-determined pitches (piano, vibraphone etc.) or collection of six resonating bowls, gongs etc. Take a deep breath and whilst holding your breath play the pitches/instruments in any order, but within phrases of 13 notes, always sustained â rhythm and dynamic ad lib. Each phrase is separated by a long pause. At the start the speed is fast, then gradually slows. When you need to breath again stop playing. Breathe slowly as the final sounds die away."
- Todd HarropCanadian Todd Harrop, now residing in Germany, has written chamber music for conventional and new instruments, notably the BohlenˆPierce clarinet.This preliminary étude resulted from a recent residency in the Canadian Rockies. At some point in life we all hear ourselves snoring, struggling to breath and to keep on sleeping. This small composition attempts to portray such a situation, bringing into play some discomfort in the middle of a dreamy atmosphere."
- Liam MolloyLiam is a guitarist from Co. Louth, with a love for all things metal. Currently studying Applied Music in DKIT, he has produced this piece as part of a project.This track utilises a crude 'Sheppard Tone', or auditory illusion, creating an ever increacing tone, alongside Taoiseach Enda Kenny's recent speech at an Ard Fheis, the same day bondholders were bailed out. This is Liam's interpretation.
- Kraig GradyKraig Grady is a composer who since 1975 has worked exclusively in alternative tuning systems. He has constructed two complete ensembles of acoustical instruments to realize his compositions and has organized and directed players to play them. His work often involves Shadow plays which developed after a decade long work with silent films he made in collaboration with Keith Barefoot. anaphoria.comThe compostion is composed in an original tuning called Copan. The performer is Lamorna Nightingale who is playing bass flute, flute, wooden baroque flute and wooden piccolo. there is no electronics use on this recording, except for over dubbing.
- Warren BurtWarren Burt is a composer, performer, writer, video artist, etc. He has lived and worked mostly in Melbourne Australia since 1975. He currently teaches at Box Hill Institute in Melbourne, and Bendigo Regional Institute of Technology in Bendigo. Information about his current work can be found at www.warrenburt.com. www.warrenburt.comThe Giant Murray Cod is a tourist icon in Swan Hill, Victoria. Late in April 2012, we made a visit to it. While there, my wife took a photo of me in front of it. This was converted into sound with a graphics to sound program, using a sample of harp arpeggios in 11 tones per octave. The 11-tone harp samples were played on a scale based on Ervin Wilson's work. In the middle of the piece is a computer voice singing an agricultural mantra from the Swan Hill region tuned in 12 tone equal temperament. The whole is a poly-microtonal celebration of the joys of frivolous, loony tourism.
- Tina PearsonTINA M PEARSON is a wilderness-bred artist whose fascination with sonic phenomena, perception and modes of human interaction has led to roles in art, education and community development. Many of her projects look at the boundaries between disciplines, cultures and species, and between creators, performers and audiences. Pearson composes and performs in acoustic, electronic and telematic settings with conventional, found, invented and virtual instruments. Her music has been commissioned for dance, video, radio and spoken word performances in Europe and North America. Tina was editor of the journal Musicworks, an instructor at OCAD University and . She performs with the global collective Avatar Orchestra Metaverse and the Victoria, Canada groups LaSaM and Open Action. The sounds are sine tones of 8 seconds (lower tones) and 3 seconds (higher tones) duration. The relationship between the two series (a just minor third) are heard in explorations of textural and melodic possibilities made possible through the Hummonica, a specially designed virtual performance instrument within the online 3-D platform Second Life.

The overall organic feeling of the gestures resembles the concept of geostatic stress.
- Richard DuckworthRich Duckworth is a former CBGBs sound engineer who currently lectures in music technology at Trinity College Dublin. Interest include microtonality, analogue audio, and popular music.Dr Bohlen's Fantasty uses the Bohlen-Pierce scale and a variety of timbres which range in harmonicity. The piece explores the dissonance space between harmonicity and inharmonicity by using shifting partials driven by physical modeling processes. The B-P tunings, the voices and the musical events are created in Pure Data and exported to a mixer for final production.

His works are performed in the U.S., Canada, and Europe including in such venues as Musique Nouvelles, Lunel, France and Sound: Scotland’s Festival of New Music.I wrote Epigram for Archytas for inclusion in book 2 of my forthcoming publication The Untempered Guitar, a collection of pieces in a variety of just tunings meant to be played on guitars that have not been re-fretted for microtones. I recorded it on a 1930s-era Stella Concert Guitar set up for lap slide playing and tuned to a just D major chord. The piece is in Archytasʼ enharmonic with the addition of the just major 3rd (5/4) at the beginning and end. It reflects my interests in 7-limit tunings and the influence of both blues and Asian music.

At present, his official name is "Claudio Meneghini", turned however into its Swiss Romansh equivalent by the composer.""This piece is a two-variation Chorale in G on a ground bass for organ. Tuning is Vicentino's adaptive just intonation, based on two chains of thirty-one quarter comma fifths, each one a quarter comma apart from the other. Just triads harmonizing chromatic melodic lines mostly characterise the tonality of this piece; septimal and undecimal chords are also used."

His principle teachers include Don Freund, Jeffery Hass, John Gibson, Ilya Levinson, and Sebastian Huydts.The metal rods of the toy piano afford the instrument an immediately recognizable timbre. This piece explores the peculiar overtone structure of these vibrating rods.

The piece consists of a number of unusual "trills". It starts with bow force trills (the applied bow pressure alternates quickly), continues with bow velocity trills, later bow position trills (!), and finally trills of the spring connection position. The composition was rendered with the physical modelling system Tao, and only slightly mastered afterwards.

I put these into GarageBand through a microphone and and edited the tracks, adding some effects. It took a while to work out how to get rid of the long silence provided by GB at the end without losing the nice lingering reverberation, but got there in the end."

His electro-acoustic work has been featured at Miami's 12 Nights Festival, Pennsylvania State University's Crosscurrents Festival, Temple University's Cybersounds Concert Series, the Society of Composers, Inc. Regional Conference, the New www.ryanolivier.comMetronomic Hommage, applies the timing relationship of beats per minute found on the metronome to the intervallic ratios used in the harmonic series. In this piece I created 40 metronomes, each set to one of the original metronome markings, and started them all at the same time. As the frequencies of beats per minute align, the partials combine to create new timbres.

Mr. Bezborodko has a Ph.D. degree from the Ukrainian National Academy of Music and holds a post of full-time associate professor (piano classes) at this institution.There is a lot of meanings of the french word "Mignonette", the most basic of which is "something very small and cute". This piece of music refers to "Mignonette" as a form of lyrical poetry that was invented and used by Russian poet-egofuturist Igor Severyanin (1887-1941).
- Nora-Louise MüllerNora-Louise Müller is one of few Bohlen-Pierce clarinetists, and the only person worldwide to perform in Carlos alpha on a clarinet. She lives in North Germany and together with percussionist composer Todd Harrop forms the xenharmonic, improvising duo Roxy auto-config. - Soressa GardnerSoressa Gardner is a vocalist, improviser and electronic music composer who collaborates with authors, dancers, visual artists and fellow musicians. She performs regularly with VEE (Vancouver Electronic Music Ensemble), and with two community based improvising choirs: DB Boyco's Voice Over Mind, and Kate Hammett-Vaughan and Carol Sawyer's Voxy Music. Soressa's work is influenced by her studies with composer Peter Hannan and vocal coach Richard Armstrong. soressa.comGreenchain was written using gong, fiddle and celesta samples layered and spread over octaves each divided into 31 equal tones. From 2000 to 2006 he was a staff member, audio technology instructor and house engineer at Harvestworks Digital Media Art Center in New York where he worked with commercial clients, students and artists-in-residence. He was a founding member and president of the Park Slope Music Forum and technical director for New Angle Intermedia, two highly successful new music presentation organizations.The elements in this sound texture were created from audio processing of the composer's own reading of the phrase âSpring Rain.â The Haiku reference is metaphorical; the larger sound form having been created from the processing of smaller phonetic components of the phrase - - particles which are assembled into a balanced larger whole. A simple statement of mood, brief and complete in itself.

Lizzie (our elegant snow-white Samoyed/Lab mix) graced this earth for nearly 15 years and joined our lives for almost 11 of those years. With this work I honor her life and her dignity and try to bring some solace to myself on her passing. Her voice joins mine, mingled with layers of modified bells and sighs. She had a lovely way of taking little breaths and then releasing a deep sigh of peace when she felt totally relaxed and calm. I reflect that gesture in

During the Spring 2012 semester he was adjunct faculty in the Dance Dept. of the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU. Each chord changes a note from the previous one; by modulation the set of possible pitches is infinite. Onsets occur on a regular grid of 610 pulses: the most frequent occur every 2-3 pulses, supported by another set every 5 or 8 pulses, another every 13 or 21 pulses, and one more every 34 or 55 pulses. It uses an exotic temperament called "porcupine" temperament, which is an excellent candidate to be a new foundation for a new type of music. This was an attempt to write a piece that "sounds like something" for no particular reason.

It is written around a 7-note scale of the TE mavila temperament and explores a simple sub-Saharan bell pattern. This piece was conceived and realized in memory of Dashan Coram, who died in May 2012."

The tuning is a harmonic series segment of harmonics 24 through and including 48. It is scored for two trombones, tuba, timpani, and tubular bells. The spoken words are a real solicitation I received on my answering machine from an anonymous source.
- John MoriartyJohn Moriarty is a 20 year old composer, vocalist, and keyboardist currently taking time off from his studies at the University of Pittsburgh to focus on his music. He has sung and played keyboards since early childhood, and he discovered microtonality when exploring alternate musical interfaces, namely generalized keyboards. http://www.youtube.com/user/JLMoriart?"All instrumental parts were played on an AXiS 49, through DynamicTonality.com's Relayer and 2032, and into Garageband with it's simulated guitar amps and effects. The tuning is TOP Porcupine, where the damage to the primes is minimized given porcupine's mappings. The vocal melody stays in the 7 note Moment Of Symmetry scale, while the "guitar" parts venture out into far more "chromatic" territory."
- Kaja BjorntvedtKaja Bjorntvedt is a Norwegian composer with international engagements. She holds a Bachelor in Piano Performance from Leeds College of Music and a Masters in Composition from Trinity College of Music in London. As well as writing acoustic music for various ensembles, she creates electro-acoustic soundscapes for performances within contemporary dance, theatre, art-installations and films. In her work she explores the connection between sounds, movements and visuals. www.kajabjorntvedt.comInspired by Gamelan patterns and nontraditional tunings, '1 minute of Glory' explores the juxtaposition of regular patterns placed strictly in time, with free flowing, almost dreamy melodic elements. The tuning sometimes clashes purposefully only to resolve later. The acoustic sounds slide between notes and use microtones on top of modal harmony, always avoiding dissonance still.
